We've known for years that you greatly increase your chances for
success when you can see it in your mind's eye. For some, this is quite
easy. Athletes, for example, can spend hours teaching themselves to see
them making a point, going over a bar, or perfectly executing a routine
that they have done hundreds of times before. But, in business, success
is seldom this cut and dried. What does success look like to you?
One of the problems with visualizing success in business is that the perception of it is different for almost every business person. In other words, what I consider to be success is probably dissimilar to yours. Not only that, but there are different degrees of what each of us accepts as successful. For example, it's unlikely that we'll both agree on the size of the turnover our companies should have, even if we're in the same industry.
Given this disparity, how can we visual success for us?
Well, that's the key. You have to decide what it is.
Here are five principles that will help you to visualize the success that you want.
1. Be sure it's relevant to what you do.
It's easy to choose the wrong thing. Some people visualize the car they want, or the house they want to buy. These things have nothing to do with the business.
2. Be specific
The more specific the picture, the easier it will be to see it. For example, let's say that you want to create a new product. What will that product do? What problem will it solve? How will it save customers time and money?
3. Set targets that stretch you, but which you are positive you can reach.
It's much more sensible to set smaller goals that you know you can reach in the short term than it is to aspire to longer term ones that you're unsure about. Remember that the overall objective is to visualize what success will look like, because that will help you to see the path to it.
4. Focus on the next step you know you need to accomplish your next objective.
Many people fail to start because they don't think they know all of the steps in advance. The truth is that you don't need to know them. You only need to know what to do next. Do that first, and in the course of doing so, you'll discover what to do after that.
5. Imagine how you'll feel when you achieve your goals
Emotion is a powerful force for action. When you actually feel successful, you'll find that you suddenly have the motivation to take you there.
