Let's forget for a moment what the debates are really about, the issues. What would it be like for you if you watched the Republican debates with the sound off? Would one candidate stand out based on body language? Would one particularly stand out based on wardrobe? Would it be a combination of the two?
Having over 25 years experience of designing, retailing and buying men's wear for my own collection and that of other high end Italian made clothing collections, I can say that watching these debates with no sound is quite interesting based on what the candidates wear to each one. For purposes here and as you can read from the title of this article, there has been a search going on the internet for the manufacturer of Rick Perry's shirts. I do not know who makes them or where they are made. I would think the interest in his shirts is mainly because of the size and height of his collar compared to the other candidates.
Most dress shirts have standard collar height in the rear of 1.25 to 1.5 inches. That height of collar tends to fit more people since it gives room for you to move your head around and does not reach up too high against the jaw line. If you notice Rick Perry's shirts, his collar is approaching or may be at two inches high. The reason I say this, without having first hand knowledge, is that I personally have a long neck and love a two inch collar. For me it sits in the correct place way below my jaw line. My head does not look as if it is sitting on the collar itself. I also get to show more shirt collar protruding from the back of my suit jacket collar.
If you view the YouTube play back of the various debates, you can see his collar is high and reaches close to the jaw line. For his shape and body style a collar approaching or at two inches is much too high for him. He should be at the 1.25 to 1.5 inch standard collar height. I believe that would make him look more presentable and more presidential, if there is such a thing as your shirt collar making you look like a president. I guess in this day and age you need everything to go your way to win a nomination or an election. The wrong color can put you out of business since the photo can be around the world in a matter of seconds.
My conclusion as you may conjure from the above paragraph is that Rick Perry needs to change his shirts. Not that the quality may not be good or the fitting may not be up to par, but the collar style as it relates to his body style is not giving him the best presentation he can have in front of the American media and the American public. Though subtle as it may be a proper shirt collar, new, clean and crisp is extremely important.
