I will attempt to write this article in as objective a manner as I can. This would not seem like a formidable challenge if it were not for the fact that I am gripped with an intense indignation regarding this topic. There is a good chance that you have heard or seen a sign advertising the "bodies" exhibition. This is the impetus for my penning this article.
Before I begin I want to acknowledge that fact that this article might strike you as belated which is true. This is because I have waited for a long time to see if someone else would write about my concerns and although there have been many people who have written about this issue I feel that they have not done justice to it.
My concern with the bodies exhibition is not that is desensitizes people or desecrates the dead. This is true but it is not what bodies does that I am concern with, it's what the bodies exhibition represents as a symptom that is the focus of my concern. To my mind, the acceptance and legality of the bodies exhibition is a culminating feature of the pernicious effects of the scientific outlook.
In fact I'm not sure if it is fair to call it an outlook at all seeing as in my opinion it is nothing less than a cataract infected myopia, but regardless of my personal qualms, I think that you, my reader, will most benefit if I were to define the problem submit a suggested solution and do both of these things in as few words as I can.
The scientific perspective is strictly objective. Its aim is to move from hypothesis to experiment and on to independent replication of the experiments results. The process is strictly objective. This is a flawless system and has giving humanity innumerable benefits and security but only as it pertains to objective reality. in terms of subjective experience on the other hand the objective outlook is a sorry method to implement. Frankly it does not work.
I could spend hours elaborating the point but I will hurry on to my suggestion. I think that the whole bodies exhibition can be replicated with mannequins. With technology today I think it would not be a serious challenge to clone the exact contours of the human body in plastic as opposed to having a real corps on exhibition.
All of this can be done with mannequins and if it were done so it would not be as vulgar or uncivilized to see the objectification of a human being in public. The educational objectives of the bodies exhibition can be accomplished with mannequins or wax replicas and the only reason for having real human bodies in an undignified and immoral display is to provoke an innate and ignoble curiosity that in my opinion grows and becomes more pronounced the more attention is paid to it.
