Who hasn't heard of Harvard, Princeton and Duke University?
But do we know what elements have been used to craft their emblems?
What were the designers thinking when they started crafting their brand marks?
Let's have a look at some of these famous school logo designs and analyze how they have been created:
1. Harvard:
Harvard School was established in 1636 with the intention of training Christian ministers. The motto of the school is "Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae" which has been adopted from Latin and means "Truth for Christ and the Church." Their emblem is a red colored shield that is surrounded by wreath and the school name at the bottom. The letters "VE RI TAS" have been inscribed in an image of a book within the shield. The use of red color in the symbol makes it energetic and lively. Overall, this emblem symbolizes education and truth.
2. Duke University:
Duke was established in 1838 and is located in Durham, North Carolina, United States. Their shield consists of Latin words "Eruditio et Religio" which means "knowledge and Faith". Their emblem consists of a blue colored shield with the letters 'D' and 'U' and an image of a cross in the middle. The school motto is inscribed on the bottom of the symbol. Blue color represents trust and dependability which makes it the perfect color for an educational institute.
3. Princeton:
Princeton was founded in 1746 in order to train religious ministers which is why their school symbol has a religious touch. The crest has Latin words inscribed in it 'Dei Sub Numine Viget', which means 'Under God's power she flourishes'. The crest also consists of an illustration of an open book which is obviously a bible. Orange and black colors are prominently used here which makes it attractive and eye catching.
4. Pennsylvania State University:
This university consists of one of the best business schools in the world. It was founded in 1855 by Benjamin Franklin. Their trademark consists of a shield with an illustration of a 'Nittany Lion'. This is a type of mountain lion that was commonly found in that region. This lion is also used as a school mascot. The main colors used in the emblem are white and blue which makes it timeless and sophisticated. This symbol also depicts tradition and history which makes it memorable and distinct.
In a nutshell, we have observed here that the school logo ideas are crafted to depict education and tradition. Mostly, solid colors are used in the symbols like red and blue. The images are crafted according to the history and culture of their areas of origin. Although the images are innovative and imaginative, the fonts of the symbols are straight and professional looking. Latin is commonly used for inscriptions in the symbols.
