KAMIS, 22 SEPTEMBER 2011, 11:13 WIB
Suwarjono, Winda Yanti
Joko Widodo (VIVAnews/Fajar Sodiq)
VIVAnews - Nama Joko Widodo kian hari makin populer.

"Kalau Lamb of God kita mampulah, kalau Metallica kita hitung-hitung dulu.

(ren)

Gestalt Principle of Closure

By

Expert Author Joffre S Essley
Gestalt principles are those rules that the human brain uses to make sense of the images we see. For instance, how do we perceive the tree in the yard? What allows us to distinguish it from the house and the grass? Gestalt is a word that German psychologists came up with to describe the field of psychology dealing with shape recognition.
One of the most important rules is the principle of closure. This principle states that our mind will connect the dots. Literally. If we see a series of dots..... our brains will interpret that not as random dots, but as a line. If those dots form a circle, we will see a circle. The principle goes well beyond dots. Any set of objects have this potential. Our mind tries to make sense by grouping objects and one of the ways is by closure. Our mind wants to create lines and shapes in order to take the randomness out of what we see.
Not only will the brain connect dots, it seeks out closure where ever it can find the opportunity. Consider the lowly brackets. Our mind understands that "[" and "]" belong together and that everything in between is subsumed within the object created by connecting those brackets. [That is why this works] but ] this doesn't [. Brackets that face away from each other aren't closed by our mind. They are just random brackets that don't belong together.
If this article doesn't convince you consider the world of advertising. Logos often take advantage of this principle to offer you images that are more than meets the eye. Check out the products in your pantry and you are likely to see several packages that employ this principle in their graphic design.
How about an application from everyday life. Remember those dashes in the middle of the road? We recognize them as a line without even thinking about it. It is natural. It is the way our brain works.
If you are involved in any form of design, these Gestalt principles are important to you. They are used everyday by artists, but they are also used by web designers. Architects should make use of them, but so should the guy designing highway signs. It may seem like it is just an academic exercise, but it can affect how much business your website receives and it can affect how nice your house looks. Either is sufficient reason for you to explore this subject.
Joffre Essley is a fan of architecture and all things related to the design of houses. He blogs at his website www.house-design-coffee.com.
There he focuses on what constitutes good design and why we like certain types of houses. He welcomes input from anyone with a like passion and interest.
He wrote a detailed article on gestalt principles at http://www.house-design-coffee.com/gestalt-principles.html. This gives some graphic examples and covers additional principles besides closure.

5 Tools You Must Have For Business Success in 2012

By

Expert Author Elizabeth Hagen
I want you to have business excellence in 2012. I've been thinking about what really makes the difference in my business and my coaching client's businesses and I came up with these 5 tools. Put them into place NOW, please!
Tool #1: Track Your Money
If you don't have a handle on the money side of your business and know exactly where you are at financially all decisions become very muddy. When you feel unclear it's easy to make decisions you regret later.
Tool: If you're not using QuickBooks, start. You will need some help to get it set up but once it's going you will know exactly where you stand financially and start making great decisions for you and your business. Tracey Gritz, a coaching client, is a QuickBooks expert and has training offerings for you to get you up and running.
Another must-have tool is the Numbers Tracking Tool. When you use this you know exactly what you have booked for the month and where you are at with your monthly goals. This tool is a fantastic focus tool, motivation tool, and recognition tool.
Tool #2: Stay Focused
When you write your to-do list every day you have a plethora of choices to write down. Usually very few have anything to do with growing your business. Instead of asking 'What should I do today?' the question you should ask is "What can I do today to put me closest to the money?" That is an entirely different question with entirely different answers.
Tool: Use 3x5 cards or I call them Action Cards and write down one 'closest to the money' task per card and write down 3 things you can do to put you closest to the money. Do these 3 tasks first. When you are done it is so much fun to chuck the card into the Recycle Bin!
Tool #3: The Answer to "What Do You Do?"
Do you stay away from networking events because you are terrified of what to say when someone asks you "What do you do?" If so you and thousands of others feel the same way. It's imperative that you stop answering the question with your title - Professional Organizer, Lawyer, Interior Designer, etc. When you do that you sound like everyone else in the room.
Tool: Start answering the question with the answer to this question "What do I (meaning you) want more of?" Do you want more residential organizing clients? Then you'd answer with "I work with busy moms who want to clear out the clutter and spend more time with their family." Do you want more staging clients? Then you'd answer with "I work with homeowners who are ready to sell their home and want it to look great and sell quickly." Get the idea?! The template is: I work with ___________________(ideal clients) who want to ________________ and __________________ (2 outcomes from working with you).
Tool #4: #1 Marketing Strategy
Would you just love to have your ideal clients calling you...often?! Then you need to get in front of them. I have 12 years of hard evidence that shows that when you speak often in front of people you'd like to work with your telephone WILL ring. That is a lot more fun than cold calling, networking (in my opinion!) and the host of other marketing strategies that to me seem like a lot more work.
Tool: What do you most love to do with your clients? Prepare a 20-minute presentation on that topic. This is so easy because you live and breathe this stuff. Put together an opening, a closing and 5 minutes each on the 3 most important points you want your audience to walk away with from your talk. At the end of the presentation offer them a special of your services and you are on your way.
Tool #5: Leverage Your List
Are you sending out a monthly newsletter? If you're not that is job number one. If you are sending a newsletter, chances are you are sending the same newsletter to your entire list. Do you really think that your entire list wants the same information?
Tool: Segment your database into categories. For example: Current clients, past clients, prospects, etc. Then make a decision that once a month you will send one of these categories a special mailing. For example, coaching clients get the Friday Feature every Friday where I update them on the SuccessPlus Coaching program calendar, other info, and give them a success tip. Members of the SuccessPlus Community get a Success Secret e-mail every Wednesday. What group do you want to send something special to each month?
Now is your time. Finish off 2011 STRONG and start 2012 off with a BANG and start using these 5 tried-and-true tools.

The Tyranny of Culture - The Imperative of Migrant Adaptation

By

Expert Author Raja A Ratnam
One can wear one's culture loosely, like an overcoat resting on one's shoulders, or wear it tightly, like a belted and hooded ankle-length raincoat. The latter may, to a substantial degree, be akin to a woman who prefers to be clad, in a Western nation, in a burqa in public, implying separation and a preferred isolation.
It can be argued that, in a free country, members should be free to dress as they wish, and possess the right not to be an integral component of the many, or to co-operate or congregate with those not like them. That is, such members would have the right only to co-exist (but not integrate) with those not like them.
How would such people view the nation of which they are part? That it is quite acceptable to enjoy the identity and security provided by a sovereign nation-state without relating in a socially meaningful manner with 'others' in the nation?
In one country today, a religious sect is reportedly exempt from paying tax. In another country, another religious sect lives a lifestyle significantly at variance with the rest of that nation. In yet another country, a particular sect pays tax, but will not work for the government in administration, civic protection or defence. There is no inter-communal tension in these nations; co-existence is possible without visible prejudice.
In a relatively new nation, by claiming to be the founder tribe, the majority tribe receives the benefit of affirmative-action policies which significantly tilt the playing field away from the horizontal. There is inter-communal tension. In a number of modern nations, a particular tribe seeks to avoid marriage between its members and others; and will not accept new members by conversion. There is no tension, as the members of this tribe are integrated with other tribes in ordinary life.
Then there are a few tribes conjoined by a shared faith, some of whose leaders seek sharia law, as immigrants in a secular nation which historically has been a Christian nation; this approach is not well received. As well, there are immigrant tribes who seek to transpose all their traditional practices, some of which are not intrinsically tied to their religion; they want what the host-nation offers, but wish to retain their traditional practices unaltered.
Is this not a cultural 'human rights' issue confronting, even challenging, a stance now developing in advanced immigrant-receiving nations that ethno-cultural diversity needs, in the interests of national identity and stability (compare and contrast with the former Yugoslavia), to become progressively integrated (but not assimilated) into a coherent people?
Integration is a like a mixed salad, a gestalt, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is also comparable to the components of a rich palatable soup, giving texture and flavour to the soup, with each component making a sufficient contribution, but without losing itself. Assimilation, however, is like a blended soup where all the ingredients are totally absorbed into the final product. I doubt if any immigrant-seeking nation seeks this outcome as current policy.
In time, assimilation may be the eventual outcome where there has been no input of new tribes. In the modern world, however, with so much migration, especially through asylum-seeking pressures, or because of a political integration of nations, a country composed of unintegrated tribes would not be a cohesive nation.
Most importantly, equal opportunity, if already available (as in Australia), may not be as accessible to marginal tribal communities were their members to be unwilling to modify those aspects of their inherited traditions and behaviours which are not in tune with the social mores and conventions of the host people. Cultural adaptation would enable speedier integration, either through accessing available equal opportunities or by demonstrating the willingness of the immigrant community to share their lives more fully with others already in the nation.
For this to happen, the host people would also need to be equally open to sharing their lives equitably. Such co-operative adaptation will not deny the preservation of the private features of religion-based cultures. That is, people can continue to pray as the wish and celebrate their festivals as they wish but without intruding into the private spaces of others.
But this requires the understanding and co-operation of the relevant priesthoods and their political affiliates.

Retail Businesses: Learning How To Compete

By

Consumers tend to be creatures of habit. They find something they like,
something that meets their needs and they usually stick with it.
They tend to only change when something really, really compels them to do so - and that is not always price.
Retail businesses face a lot of competition; from similar size stores, online marketplaces and big box stores. These entities, if not managed for, can easily drive your retail company out of business.
But, all businesses lack something. And that something is shelf space.
No business can carry every item or even every style, shape or flavor of every item.
What this means is that these businesses or any business for that matter can't satisfy all customers. And, if a customer cannot be satisfied, that is an opportunity for another business - namely your business.
Have you ever gone to a store to find a certain brand or a certain quality only to find that they either don't carry it, quit carrying it or just are simply out of it (shown by the big empty space on the shelf where the item use to be)?
I know I have. If you have, then you understand that feeling. The feeling that you either have to go somewhere else (big waste of time) or settle for another item; an item that you either don't want or that does not fully meet your needs.
Knowing that any one store (online or off) cannot be all things to all consumers opens up several ways in which retail businesses can compete - even against those big box stores; here are three of the top ways:
1) Offer More Selection:
Big stores like WalMart and Target carry a lot of products from household goods, clothes, toys and jewelry to furniture, music and food.
In order for them to carry that many different products, they can only carry a few styles or types of each item.
Go to your favorite big box store and try to find a pair of running shorts that are light blue in color. What you will find is that they carry different sizes of black or white shorts but not ones of different or unique colors.
These stores just don't have the shelf space to carry all colors so they only carry items that they hope will resonate with a larger majority of consumers (standard items).
But, if your retail business can offer more colors or even more styles - your business can attract and retain those customers who want something more than just the standard product.
And, this does not just mean keeping a large selection of brand name goods as many times off brand products offer just as good or better quality at reasonable prices.
You've heard the old adage with many well known products that it's not the product that commands that price as half the price is just in the name.
2) Keep Your Shelves Stocked:
I hate going to a store, a store that I know carries a certain product, only to find out that they are out of that product - that the store either did not order enough or that I was not there when the shipment came in.
I really hate it when I make that store my destination knowing that they carry that product only to drive all that way and find out they are out of that product.
Doing so, not having the products on hand that customers want, when they want them does not instill a loyalty in that customer.
If your can keep its shelves stock - stocked with products that your customers know they can come and get at any time - opens up an opportunity to instill a sense of loyalty in your customers as well as attract other, frustrated customers.
We are a very busy people. Thus, if we know, as consumers, that we can go to your store and always (ALWAYS) get what we want, we are more willing to pay a little more for that product and that convenience.
3) Quality:
Most online stores or big box stores compete on price. Thus, their suppliers have to provide them their cheapest products. And, as you may know, cheap usually means lower quality.
If your retail business can provide better quality, typically at higher prices, there are niche buyers who understand that quality can save them money over time and thus are willing to pay more now.
You go to a big box store or national online marketplace and buy a table top gas grill for $50. You make that selection based on price and price alone. This is what many of these discount stores rely on.
You get the product home and set it up. Within a month, the product is not working and you have to buy another. What do you do? Do you pay another $50 for the same product knowing that it may not last a month?
On the other hand, another buyer spends $90 in your store for a better quality gas grill. This grill last the buyer one year before it has to be replaced.
Who got the better the deal?
Remember, there are buyers out there, even the most frugal ones, who will spend more money now - make larger purchases - if they understand the long-term cost benefits of buying better products - of buying your higher quality products.
You just have to educate them. And, that means using your marketing efforts to not just let them know where to find you or to promote your latest sale - but, use that effort to educate them on the overall cost savings they will realize from buying from you.
Far too long have we seen big box stores enter local markets or online stores offer similar products just to watch local mom and pop operations fold up - taking away consumer choice and convenience.
It does not have to be this way if your retail business can learn how to compete. Learning to compete takes three things:
1) Understanding Your Competitors - finding their weaknesses and exploiting them.
2) Understanding Your Customers - Know what pains or needs your customers really have that are not being met or not being met fully and being flexible enough in your business to provide what they actually need or want.
3) Marketing - if you know your product offers better quality and thus more long-term costs saving, then you also have to let your customers know. Remember, customers are creatures of habit and to get them to switch to your business and buy your products; you really have to compel them to and not just hope that they will figure it out on their own.
If you want your retail small business to not only survive but to grow and prosper in this very competitive environment, then learn how your business can actually compete and win against those big boys.

Well Rounded Brand Strategy = Guaranteed Sales

By

Go Social: For once one might skip their morning tea but one can never forget to check their FB and Twitter account. This is the power of the social media sites. Further, Face Book alone has over 550 million active users. Including Face Book marketing in your brand strategy makes a lot of business sense. Combined with Tweeter marketing, you reach out to another 200 million people. It's no rocket science that reaching out to more people significantly boosts up your chances of sales.
With a coherent social media campaign you can make your brand popular to millions on the social networking sites. Converting interested leads into sales becomes a lot easy then. Even if you are able to convert one percent, you make a million dollars. A word of advice - get people talking about what they love (your product, of course). Don't pitch your products too hard, this will make them feel you are trying to sell to them forcefully.
Got it, Advertise it: Just got the latest collection in your store? Go advertising it on big banners, get eye-catchy flyers and send out impressive invites. Grab this opportunity to talk to your target customers about how your new range of products is different and delivers customer-centric solutions. You might consider pay-per-click advertising campaigns for your brand strategy as well. This way you call attention to your store and get more footfalls which get converted into, you guessed it right, sales.
EDM: Electronic direct marketing has the best of both conventional marketing and modern internet-based marketing. EDM campaign has the personal touch of print marketing and the cost effectiveness of e-marketing. Notify your specific customers of your special deals and new developments directly to each customer via strategically designed e-flyers. This increases web traffic almost instantly without spending a fortune. Remember, relevant traffic is one step way from sales.
If you think this all is very cumbersome, consider to partner with a brand management company. They will carry out a cohesive branding campaign and also assist you with your business' changing requirements. This way you focus on doing what you are good at- your business and leave the hassles of branding to the experts.

Integrity Is Who You Are - Like DNA

By

Expert Author John Gordon Smith
Since we seem to be faced with another shortage of integrity coming from the direction of our politicians, it is time we begin to speculate on what the cost would be, in case we need to arrange a much needed transfusion of integrity to make right their power hungry souls. Buying integrity for this purpose leads us to what should be paid and if you're the seller, the concern would be how much should be charged. To determine this, we would need to establish a standard of measure - by the ounce or by the pound, maybe by the dimensions or cubic volume involved.
But before we find a way to measure it, we would first need to know how we are going to dispense it, possibly by blending it in easily or having it swallowed hard. It's quite possible that there may be reactions from the recipients in case the qualities of the integrity involved are different in their degree of purity. Nevertheless, this may not be as easy as initially thought, for it may not mix well at all or at least cause a long period of adaption before we see any expected improvement.
Facing these obstacles, we should realize that integrity is much like a person's DNA, because integrity is not just a part of you, IT REALLY IS YOU.
This is something most people don't think about, don't even know that this characteristic of theirs even exists. Hello out there, people really are watching you. They may be admiring you or they could be hating you for what you are, for what you do. Which one of these is for you?
It all depends on what you project, what you unknowingly send out into the world about yourself and what you think of others. Are you caring or selfish, warm or icy, open to new thoughts and concepts or closed tight wearing a sign saying do not disturb? Put a finger on your own pulse of integrity to see what kind of reading you get.
A new project is underway for the growth and enhancement of integrity, to assist those interested in having more integrity in the world. The Integrity Society is expected to launch in the near future; the directors have produced a definition for integrity using the Virtue Model; but very simply put for now: Ethics are how you think.... Virtues are what you do.... Integrity is who you are. ©
But this new effort for the enhancement of integrity could be completely lost on those who "don't get it", those so busily engrossed in themselves that they have no understanding of what it takes to reflect upon matters such as accountability, values, and life's core issues involving relationships at work and at home. For these lost types, we can only hope that they remain harmless in a capacity that allows them to display their shallowness, without affecting important facets of what truly makes the world go round.

Jakarta - Partai Demokrat (PD) melihat sosok Dahlan Iskan adalah middle class darling alias dambaan kelas menengah. Sosok pekerja keras seperti Dahlan dipandang cocok menjadi capres maupun cawapres.

Ramadhan sendiri pernah 15 tahun bekerja bersama Dahlan Iskan.

"Menurut saya, Pak Dahlan punya segalanya.

The Capitalist System in a Democracy

By

Capitalism to some is an ugly word.
To others it is simply a system where goods and services are produced sold and distributed to the consumer and those that are involved in the production make a profit from their efforts.
There are three main parts to capitalism.
First comes the idea for a product or service. The entrepreneur uses the idea to produce the goods or services using the second and third parts which are capital and labor.
There is a fourth aspect to capitalism which is the most unpopular but without it there would be no incentive to turn ideas into products, and that is the desire to be wealthy or at least financially independent. I call it greed.
Greed is sometimes frowned upon as a negative trait but I see it as a driving force that creates the incentive to make money. Therefore it is the backbone of Capitalism. The duty of all capitalists and entrepreneurs is to use all possible means available to them to make money and increase profits. Whether it is the genius of inventiveness or simply to take someone else's idea or business and apply their own abilities to make it turn a profit, they have every right to do so.
As mentioned earlier, it is totally impossible to be a successful entrepreneur without the input of capital and labor. Therefore the fruits of the enterprise must also be shared. Capital is rewarded with interest payments while labor is paid salaries and wages in relation to there value to the enterprise.
Each has to be protected so that the entrepreneur pays a fair piece of the earnings to labor and capital is rewarded by a previously arranged rate of interest. Labor therefore, needs to have its own protector so as to ensure he gets a fair deal. Each part has an interest in the success of the enterprise and each is entitled to a reward for their efforts. To ensure this there has to be a set of rules that govern the behavior of all parties involved. The protector of the worker is organized labor in the form of a trade organization such as a workers association or trade union. In the same way that capital has an agreement as to the interest they are paid on loans or lines of credit, so too should workers in the form of a labor agreement or contract to cover such things as working conditions, rates of pay, and health related issues such as paid sick days or health care coverage. And finally pension provisions to protect them after their productive years are over.
All three parties need to know the rules under which they operate in order to focus on the production and sale of the goods and services they offer. This lends itself to stability and growth which in turn leads to the highest possible productivity and profit. The more stable the organization is, the more productive it is and makes for a peaceful and happy work environment.
To make all this work there has to be a 'referee' that set the rules under which all enterprises operate regardless of the contractual agreement between the three parties. Government is required to set the social contract under which business is conducted within the wider society as it is responsible for providing vital infrastructure that makes it possible to do business. These include, but are not restricted to, security, education that provides the workforce with the expertise to contribute to the organization, a health system that is readily available, fire, water, roads and other vital services that the society needs. This is the role of government.
In return for all that it provides, there is that little matter of taxes. The government taxation policies should be designed in such a way as not to be punitive, should be fair, should always be transparent and should encourage expansion of the economy. In this way by promoting expansion it actually enlarges the tax base which provides more revenue that is necessary for greater expansion of opportunity in which case, all sectors of the society can enjoy a higher standard of living, reduced poverty, increasing its capacity to
provide for the most vulnerable members of society.
All of the above can be realized in a capitalist system within a democracy that respects the rights and responsibilities of all members of society. If government understands its role of protecting the weak from the strong while keeping the strong, strong there is enough room for respectful disagreement as to which set of policies support the idea of the common good as outlined in the constitution.
If Capitalism works within the parameters set by government in a democratic system more new ideas are created and applied, everybody who wants a job could have one, the rich would become richer, the middle class would thrive and prosperity would be within reach of all who strive for it.
