If you're hesitating at all in your response, there is your answer. If you're feeling out of control, or like your work is never done, your business is running you. If you're up nights worrying about how you're going to make payroll, or pay for your next delivery, your business is running you. If you feel you can never take a day off, your business is running you. What will it take to change that? Would it be having more time? A better or more qualified staff? A well-forecasted budget? It's time to start exercising your leadership muscle.
Implementing changes to this state of business can't be done overnight, but like most things, admitting you have a problem is the first step to making a change. I'm a big fan of making lists, so my advice is to keep a small notebook with you for a few days and keep notes about what is going on that feels out of control. The things on your list will fall into three main categories: time, team, and money. Put the items on your list into the appropriate categories. See what you can start changing right away. I like to start with the shortest list because this small success will energize you and inspire you to tackle the bigger ones.
Team issues can be anything from being over- or under-staffed to having poorly trained or unskilled employees. You may also be experiencing issues due to people languishing too long in the same role and becoming bored and restless. Maybe you've made a hiring mistake that you just haven't gotten around to addressing. If it's a simple staffing problem, this shouldn't be too hard to manage, but more sensitive issues require thought and finesse. If you are dealing with disciplinary problems, you will need to protect yourself from legal action by making your policies transparent and your enforcement consistent.
Time issues are often the easiest to tackle. They often stem from a need to control all aspects of your business. Maybe you're doing this because you've created a system so specific and complex that no one else could figure it out, and now you can't delegate it. Are you spending time on tasks you could hire someone else to do at a much lower rate that your time is worth? Even if you're not paying yourself- and you should be paying yourself- your time is valuable. Put a price on it to help with decisions of how you spend it. Delegation and planning are the first and best ways to address time concerns. You really need to be honest with yourself about time. Some people claim they have SOOOO much to do and are pressed for time because it makes them feel needed. Others create work to avoid other things-a difficult situation at home, loneliness, or boredom, for example.
Money issues are often tied to either time or team. Are you charging enough for your products or services? If your costs are going up, you need to raise your prices! If you don't value your product and your time, no one else will either. If you are overstaffed but afraid to let go of someone, you need to make that tough decision today. If money worries are keeping you up at night, avoiding them or worrying won't solve your problems! Find out where you're spending too much and where exactly your money is going, and make the necessary changes.
If you're not sure where to start, if you've made your list and feel overwhelmed, or if you're not sure how to prioritize, make an appointment with me. I guarantee we can get that leadership muscle toned and ready to run the business of your dreams! http://www.yourenoughcoaching.com
