Attending a marketing event with your trade show displays, such as pop up displays and banner stands, is a lot of work. There's plenty to think about, such as how you're going to transport your exhibits, which employees are going to work there and more. Before you go, however, take care to make sure you're not making these mistakes that can kill your business.
Mistake #1: Being Unprepared To Work At Your Trade Show Displays
There's no excuse for being unprepared. Although some employees will be confident that they can 'wing it,' you should insist that they prepare. They should learn a little bit about the types of people and businesses that will be at the event (this information is available from the event coordinators, especially if this is an annual event). They should also familiarize themselves with some of your biggest customers who are planning on attending. Knowing about a client's contract and their needs will set the tone that your company really cares about your clients and that they're not just a number to you. Lastly, learn everything you can about your product. Even though salespeople aren't technical support personnel, they should be able to answer most common questions about what the product can do.
Mistake #2: Having Worn Out Pop Up Displays And Banner Stands
Your pop up displays and banner stands help shape the first impressions of visitors. Are your exhibits looking worn out and tired? If so, it's time to replace them. If you're can't afford to replace everything at once, consider updating your banner stands first and placing them toward the front of your display. Banner stands are relatively inexpensive so companies with even the smallest of budgets can usually afford to replace them without too much hardship.
Mistake #3: Unprofessional Habits And Appearances
Depending on your industry and the type of event you're attending, you might be able to wear clean denim jeans and polo shirts. However, if your event is a little more formal, you can't go wrong with professional business attire. That doesn't mean you have to wear a full suit, but a nice pair of slacks, a professional shirt and some professional, yet comfortable, shoes will do. To match your clothing, make sure you don't do anything that could put customers off. This can include smacking on gum, eating and drinking, joking with coworkers and being overly familiar with visitors to your trade show displays.
Mistake #4: Not Following Up After The Event
This is the biggest mistake marketers can make -- not following up on leads. If someone spent the time to talk to you at your trade show displays, you should follow up with them. Don't wait for potential customers to come your way. Be proactive when following up and you'll have a better sales record.
Avoiding these mistakes can be easy to do, but you will need to make the effort. Don't let your bad habits kill your business. Instead, take the time to make the right impression when you're taking your trade show displays to an event.
