Your visual displays are a very important part of running a successful boutique. Learning how to put key elements together is a valuable thing to learn if you are a boutique owner. Many people hire a professional to get started, but with a little leg work, you can become an expert yourself. Most boutique owners are self-starters and want to learn how to do it themselves, anyway. Use this guide to teach yourself what to keep in mind as you work on your displays in your own boutique.
1) Keep balance in mind so that your store is fairly consistent throughout. You don't want big elaborate displays in the front and then only garment racks from there on back. People will quickly lose interest and leave the store, no matter how interested they were at first glance.
2) That first impression is, however, very important. They say "don't judge a book by its cover", but that's exactly what people do when they're shopping. It is our instinct to use visual cues to determine whether or not something is "safe" or worth our time and effort. Throwing off someone's first impression can quickly turn them away. Make sure that quality, inventory, style, and your store image are clearly communicated in every aspect of your boutique.
3) Remember that people shop in boutiques to have a pleasant and unique shopping experience. They want to find unique items that they don't see anywhere else. If you carry obscure or unique brands that set you apart from large department stores or other boutiques, make sure that you advertise that fact on your signage or window displays.
4) Keep things interesting as people work their way through the store. Keep letting them know that you have unique items throughout and they will want to continue shopping all the way to the back. One easy way to hold their interest through the entire store is to move some of your displays up high. This way, people can see from far away that there is something that they want to look at deeper inside. Using slatwall is a really easy and effective way to do this. You can create interesting visuals up high on the walls so that everyone can see what you have at a glance. Slatwall accessories are easy to maneuver so you can change up your displays often. Slatwall panels can be put in oddly shaped areas or assembled to create free-standing displays. Do this and you'll hold the interest of your clientele for years to come.
