These days, cheap and free solutions for designing a logo are all
over the Internet. But are you getting the results you want? Are you
satisfied with the end product?
As a graphic designer with much experience in designing logos, let me share with you some key principles that will ensure you get the logo of your dreams!
1) Analyze your marketing objectives with this new logo. What changes are you hoping to affect? What is your vision of the logo? If you already have a logo that you want to replace, what about it isn't working for you? How will you get this logo in front of your prospects? What is your marketing budget for this new logo? What point are you trying to make with this new logo?
2) Choose an image that communicates your message, not confuses your message. Make sure it's simple and not too complicated. Beware of cheesy clip art that will cheapen the message you're trying to convey. On the Internet there are many resources for images. Just make sure that you have the proper licenses. You do not want to steal intellectual property and then pay the price for it later.
3) Select colors that will enhance your marketing and interest your prospects. Realize that there is psychology behind colors: colors mean something and they communicate a message. Use color strategically to connect with your audience. Use a contrast of colors that will appeal to your audience and then be consistent with these colors with all your marketing materials and collateral, both online and offline.
4) Your business name should be designed in fonts that convey associations of the meaning behind your message. Words are pictures and fonts are the way you can communicate those pictures. Be sure you have the license for these fonts and make sure they are not overused. Only have two different kinds of fonts at the most and make sure that the type is readable.
5) Make sure you have designed your logo in the right resolution. Before printing your logo or putting it on the web, be sure it is not too blurry or jagged. Start by designing your logo in a large format and then scale it down for applications such as the Internet.
