1. Learn about the right print size
One very common mistake made by people designing their own brochures is the selection of an inappropriate setup size while designing the brochure. This is very difficult to correct and often the printer has to return the layout to the client. If your layout size is 8.5 x 11 and you want it printed on 8 x 10 sheets, the printing service then needs to shrink or stretch the layout according to the paper size, which affects the resolution of the print negatively.
2. Allowing margin for bleed
Print bleed offers insurance for the brochure design to look perfect. The printing is initially done on large sheets and later each brochure is sliced into individual units. The blades are quite accurate, yet there can be slight fluctuations while cutting hundreds of units. When you expand the design a little beyond the page borders, the cutting will still leave you with perfect pieces covered in ink all over. The best strategy is to design your brochure with 1/8 inch extra space beyond each border.
3. Resolution is extremely important
Always use images with high resolution in the layout, to create a professional brochure design. If the resolution is not right, the images will look blurry or soft. When you view an image on your computer and it looks perfect, remember that it is 72 dpi or dots per inch, and that is okay for your computer screen, however, very insufficient for a professional brochure.
4. Choosing the right paper
Print shops generally use 1001b or 801b stock paper for printing brochures, with numerous options of matte or glossy finishes. You can choose whatever suits you; however, 1001b is considerably a better option with not much difference in cost. Using heavy paper might make you seem like a good professional to your potential clients. If you have used numerous dark colours, your brochure will look glossy anyways, however, a varnish could prevent smudges and fingerprints.
5. Originality and creativity
You need to be very clear about the information you want your brochure to communicate. To get a few ideas, look at what your competitors are doing with their promotional material. Get ideas about what you should or shouldn't do and if in doubt, consult with a graphic design company. Although the middle pages of the brochure are important, the front cover is what people will notice first while they scan display shelves. It has to be appealing and attractive to make the potential clients choose to pick it up.
