movie problem

The Problem With Movies and How to Solve Them

By   |
Modern movies are a glorious thing, but they are also rife with problems. Modern movies are falling into a set of weird choices, and odd habits that can make watching movies into a sort of nightmare. Since there are so many problems with movies I decided to tackle two of them here, and we will revisit this issue in another article.
The first problem I have is poor audio mixing. What do I mean by this? Let's say you open up your mailbox and you have a couple movies from Netflix sitting there (I almost made this example driving to Blockbuster, but then I remembered it was 2016). You pop in the Blu-Ray/ DVD into your player of choice and you sit back and you have to turn the volume down because there a lot of explosions and such. Then people start talking and you have to find the remote because they might as well be whispering! Then another explosion and now you're deaf because the damn thing was so ear piercingly loud. This can be annoying. Hell it's one of easiest ways to take me out of a movie, to be honest. So why does this happen? Well when the audio for movies is mixed, they mix it for a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound setup because that is the optimal way to watch a movie. You see, in 5.1 surround sound each speaker has its own job. The center speaker handles dialogue, the 2 side speakers are for explosions and "bwaam" noises in Christopher Nolan movies, the subwoofer is for "dat bass", and lastly the 2 (or 4 if you have 7.1) satellite speakers are for the surround effects. That's really cool and all, but I am not in a position to buy a 5.1 surround sound setup. I am a very poor college student who can only afford to eat ramen noodles 4 times a week (The other times I eat the cardboard the ramen came in. I have a sad life). I set up my dad's stereo from like the 80's to be my "hi-fi" audio setup which replaces my TV's stereo sound with a slightly less awful stereo sound. So when the DVD/Blu-Ray player outputs a 5.1 signal, my poor stereo speakers can only replicate the 2 front side speakers. This is why explosions are so loud. The dialogue is going to a non-existent center speaker, which is why it comes out so quiet.
So what's the solution? Add two dialogue tracks. One mixed in good super old fashioned stereo and the other mixed in the fancy pants 5.1/7.1 goodness. This way I can set the volume to a comfortable volume, and leave it there. This may sound like a super easy solution, but I would hazard a guess that mixing audio is a very difficult task, and not one easily undertaken. However I think that it's well worth it and shows that movie studios are willing to go the extra mile for those who still want to watch their favorite movies, but maybe aren't the most well off.
Well, we have done an audio problem, So let's finish this article with a visual problem. This is probably the two biggest problems I have modern movies today. Shaky Cam and jump cuts. For those unfamiliar with shaky cam as a concept, I am sorry that I have to be the one who has to tell you about it. Basically it's the worst form of visual storytelling imaginable. That's not the most telling description, is it? OK, so shaky cam is exactly what it sounds like. It's basically the director telling the cameraman to shake the camera as hard as they can. This is in order to make the action look frantic. Sounds stupid right, but it's a real thing. The problem with shaky cam is that it is made worse by terrible, quick, jumpy editing. This is also just what it sounds like. It is the use of a million and a half different cuts in order to convey frantic action. However in reality, it often make it so that the scene is impossible to understand. These are just the tools of the incredibly lazy. The use of these two tools in conjunction makes a movie's action scenes a chore to watch, and impossible to understand. You have to actively try to piece together when the actors are being hit, because the shot never actually shows it. You hear a flurry of sound effects, and you see a blurry mess of hands and faces, but it's just audio and visual garbage that the director is trying to pass off as incredible action.
The solution to this problem is actually pretty simple. Hire better directors. Directors that are good at their jobs will make the action look good without the use of cheap tricks and quick editing. There are fantastic directors when it comes to filming action. Take the Wachowski siblings. Sure, they have made a couple stinkers in the last couple years, but the first Matrix movie is incredibly well directed. There are uses of wide shots, so we so exactly what is going on, there's just the right amount of slow motion so we really feel it when characters get hit. The score is used perfectly, so when the hero gets hit hard, the music slows down and gets quieter. The Subway scene in the matrix encapsulates all of that.
Contrast this from Alex Cross. The camera is literally just shaking. You don't see the hits connect. You see the main character hit the villain and then after a cut you see the villain react. This is probably to cover up the fact that the actors were not properly choreographed.
If you can get a director who knows how to film an action scenes, as well as who knows what he wants the actors to do, and how to choreograph them to do that, then you don't need terrible shaky cam to cover up anything. You don't need jump edits because you'll want the audience to see your work.
There you have it. These are the 2 biggest problems I see with movies as of right now.

A Brief History of Film Production

By

Expert Author Valeria Stephens
Today, video can be shot from cell phones, digital cameras and numerous other devices on the market. You probably pull out your smartphone and begin taping your child's concert or view the video that you shot at the zoo of the animals via your camera. Although this technology doesn't seem as exciting as some of the apps on your cell phone, back in the 1800s, film was quite different and a true advancement in technology.
The Beginning of Film Production
In the 17th century, there were no options for film production programs in a formal education setting. In fact, during this time, a man by the name of Athanasius Kircher of Rome, Italy invented a primitive version of a "magic lantern," which projected images from transparencies. It utilized a light source like a candle. Throughout the 1800s, several inventions were made that gave the illusion of motion including a zoopraxiscope, fantascope and a thaumatrope. In 1890, the mechanism that allows the film to advance and the perforated movie were created by Edison and Dickson. Dickson's invention of a basic camera that was motor powered and could photograph motion picture was known as a kinetograph. Years before that Edison attempted to record onto a wax cylinder but was unsuccessful.
It wasn't until 1895 that the first public viewing of a film occurred. Still, film production programs and audio engineering school weren't yet established. In December 1895, the Lumière brothers developed the first cinema and showed a film called "The Arrival of the Train at La Ciotat," which happened in the Indien salon located in Paris, France. This first public demonstration used a projector known as a cinematographe. When the first cinema was created, film was about daily life regarding work and family. However, Georges Méliès later invented the first fiction films, although there still weren't any film production programs. Not long after, Hollywood became known for film.
The Advent of Sound
Prior to October 6, 1927, film didn't not have any sound, which anyone who attends one of the many film production programs of today, knows what a vital factor sound is to any film. This caused quite a stir because many of the actors and actresses did not look like they should sound the way they do. This led to vocalization playing a key role in actor and actresses jobs.
Animation
As a child, you probably enjoyed cartoons, and you may even be interested film production programs that specialize in animation; however, animation didn't come to be until around the time of the Great Depression. In fact, Mickey Mouse didn't make his film debut until 1928, when he starred in "Steamboat Willie." Color film started in 1935 with the movie, "Becky Sharp."
Over the course of many decades film production courses became available and so did audio engineering schools. Concepts and inventions like high definition, camcorders and cell phones that record video became popular as well.

As you browse on the internet, you will notice that video advertising is out there everywhere. Video production is considered as a very effective way to advertise these days. Take note that people tend to spend more time on sites that have pictures and videos than those with just a bunch of words. That's why video production is gaining a lot of interests among businesses these days. But when making a video, it is said that you have only ten seconds to grab your viewer's attention. With this, it is imperative that the video you will create must have an engaging content. But for those who are new into the field of video production, they might ask where to start and what to do first? Here are some tips to begin creating an effective video.
Begin with Your Basic Idea
Just like any other project, your video production must also begin with the basic idea that you want to get to your intended viewers. Before the actual video production begins, take note that this is the start of the pre-production process.
Have a Program Objective
Your program objective is the single, overall defining idea, concept, or information that you really want your video to get across or say to your audience. This is what you want your audience to get from your created video. Have a simple program objective with a good sharp focus for the general audience to be able to understand it. Meanwhile, a very broad program objective is generally hard for the audience to understand. It should be avoided unless the video is just strictly for entertainment.
Consider the 'Angle' or 'Treatment' of Your Video
The angle of a video is a specific approach, viewpoint or slant on the subject, story or concept that you are trying to deliver to your audience. When making a video, your treatment of the subject should be real, relevant and fresh to the audience. Use an angle that will get the audience involved with the video. Although this may require a bit of time and hard thinking on your part, remember, that a good angle is one of the most important factors to a successful video. Moreover, a good angle can also transform a not-so-very interesting story into a one that can attract a wide audience.
Make a Good Script
A good video has a good written script. This is one of the factors that you should pay attention to in order to come up with a great video. To do this, you have to understand your company's products and services, as well as its unique selling points. Also take a look at your target audience and their concerns, before you even begin the script writing process.
If all of those above-mentioned points are already addressed, you can now proceed to the production stage. Remember that having an idea and channeling it through to a completed video can be demanding. But if you have clarity on what you want to make, you will have a great chances of producing an outstanding video. While the world of video production can be daunting for those who are not familiar with it, one should realize that it is a powerful medium to convey a message.

A wedding, being the once-in-a-lifetime event, demands that that the videographer be utmost attentive and alert at all times. Basic shooting skills are not the only tools required by a videographer. The videographer has to be at many different places at the same time in a wedding! The wedding and reception ceremony require good time and resource management skills on the part of the videographer.
If the videographer is covering the event solo, then they have to be careful because they will be managing the cameras on their own. It will require proper planning so that nothing is left uncovered.
If the videographer is a friend of the bride and groom, they might think that they will be able to cover the event, as well as attend the ceremonies as a guest. However, experienced videographers say that it is very likely that you will be working nearly all the time and will not really get to enjoy the event as a guest.
If you have been asked to cover the wedding of some friend or relative and have no idea where to begin, you could probably take some tips from veteran videographers.
Preparation
Preparation of wedding videography will mean attending rehearsals, planning on how to capture key moments and deciding the placement of cameras.
Develop a schedule or checklist of how you will cover the event. This should include the things you need to do before the wedding such as arranging cameras and relevant equipment beforehand.
The schedule should also include how you will cover happenings such as the groom and bride getting prepared, the groom and bride arriving at the venue, and the wedding ceremony.
If you are using a two-shoot camera, you could shoot the bride's procession from the bride's side of the aisle at the altar steps. After the bride's arrival, the best place for you to move with the camera would be behind the officiant. For this, you will need to coordinate with the officiant at the time of rehearsal.
Shots to take at the wedding
It will also be in the benefit of the first- time videographer to remember some key shots that they must cover, some of which are the arrival of the wedding party, entrance of bride, dance, cake-cutting, guest book signings and cutaways. A reenactment of the ring ceremony can also be staged.
Seasoned videographers also advise first-time videographers to keep ample time at hand for preparing equipment in the church before the arrival of the wedding party. There is never enough time as the wedding party may arrive before time and your equipment may not be ready to cover the proceedings.

How to Capture the Best Videos

At some point or another, we need photographs or videos to capture the precious moments in our lives. For best memories videography, some people hire expert videographers.
For instance, if it is a birthday party or a housewarming party, some may wonder how they will get the chance to enjoy the event if they spend all their time covering it? Videographers are experienced at recording each moment so you have the perfect memories videography to cherish later on. You do not have to worry about the equipment for videography and you can concentrate on the event preparations.
However, if you feel you cannot spend much on hiring someone to cover the event for you, then you could go for videography on your own. The best way to enjoy an event would be to cover it from the beginning to the end.
To cover the event by yourself, you need to remember some tips and techniques used by experienced professionals!
Things to avoid
One mistake that amateur videographers tend to make is excessive use of on-screen zoom. Motor zooming or zooming in on nearly everything makes viewers dizzy.
Another mistake to avoid is headhunting or placing every subject at the center of the screen. According to the rule of thirds, you should divide your screen with two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. Place your subject off-center, as this will make the shot more interesting.
Also, avoid taking too small a shot. You must make sure that when you are taking your shot, it is without any panning or zooming and you have extra footage in case you later need it for cross-dissolves.
Things to do
Use a tripod. Professional videographers use a tripod stand. It stabilizes the image. A shaky video is not so pleasant to watch. In addition, a tripod leaves you free to focus on other important aspects of the shoot rather than worrying on how to steady the camera.
Take many shots for your video. You need to take long shots as well as shots in ample quantity. In the end, you will only use the best shots in your movie and you will have a wide variety of options to choose from.
Also, use a clip-on mike for better audio. Just relying on the built-in mike of the camera will result in poor audio and you will mostly be able to shoot only medium or close-up shots.

Business Videography is a unique amalgamation of traditional and modern marketing tools. Traditional marketing tools have mainly focused on marketing products and services to the masses instead of a select audience. In contrast, niche-marketing tools target only the intended audience of an organization.
Video marketing brings together the best of features from both types of marketing. The content is developed for the intended audience and it fully serves the interests of its targeted audience as it makes use of keywords and tags.
Corporate videos can be undertaken to develop a video on the pattern of a traditional television commercial. However, experts say that instead of developing a video just for the sake of it, the video should offer some value and build some personal rapport with the consumers, that is to say, corporate Videography can be used as a valuable tool for niche marketing. Videography can be very easily used to elevate a business in comparison to its competitors.
How to do that?
Business Videography experts say that a video will best serve its purpose if it answers some queries and problems of consumers. Of course, a webpage titled 'Frequently Asked Questions' will attempt to do the same too. However, certain things are best explained through demonstration. A fitness trainer can create a video answering the question "What is the correct way of performing push-ups?"
Likewise, a video could be developed answering a question which is often not asked by consumers. In this way, the business is thinking a step further and hence dispatches valuable information to the consumer.
Unlike traditional forms of marketing tools such as commercials, brochures and flyers, video will be seen by only those who are interested in a particular product or service. Hence, only its intended audience seeks the video.
This means that any call-to-action/sales pitch will be received much more favorably. This goes in the favor of the business. Businesses should make use of relevant keywords when uploading videos on video sites such as YouTube. The video title should also be a relevant one so it is easily searchable.
Perhaps, the best thing about video marketing is that a business owner is able to develop 'face-to-face' interaction with consumers, even if it is only in virtual space. This allows a business owner to develop relations and build rapport with consumers. Where one-way communication messages fail, video can be helpful to captivate and engage consumers.

How to Appreciate Movies

Do you know how to appreciate movies? Why are you going to movies? Why are you watching movies in the first place?
Since the birth of cinematography, the movie industry has developed to an extent that no one would have even dreamed of 150 years ago. Yet audio-visual presentations have entirely changed our lives. From entertaining movies to the daily TV ad diet, the movie or TV screen has us glued to its message.
But how do you appreciate the message? Even if the message itself is not what you're looking for, you can still appreciate how it comes across to you. When you understand and realize all the intricacies that go into creating an audio-visual presentation or a movie, you can see whether what you are being presented with was done with care and with you in mind or without any thoughts and doesn't really deserve your attention.
You usually watch a movie for entertainment. You want to take a break from your daily grind and fly into another world. A world of dreams or minimally a world that will make you forget for a couple of hours the boring day to day activities that you're clung to.
What's better than being transported flying the air, climbing a mountain, diving a deep sea or sleeping lazily on a beach for two hours? It's nice from time to time to believe you can simply dress in a Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde or be encapsulated in a lunar module on Apollo 13 for a moment. How two men in a room, as in the "King's Speech", can captivate an audience for a couple of hours?
What is it that makes the difference between a movie where you literally forget who you are and a movie that is boring to death and you leave before the end?
It all comes down to the minute details that capture every single one of your senses: feeling, touch, sight, sound, vibration, color, atmosphere, motion, etc. The screen will encroach deeply upon each of your organs right down to your guts and the blood in your vessels.
You'll be feeling happy, sad, angry, hopeless, excited, etc. depending upon the action, the music, the colors, the speed. The combination is extreme and your enthrallment will rest on how well each art is applied.
The most amazing aspect is that this is done in harmony and with the participation of many, many artists who each cooperate with one another to bring about a spectacular presentation, a message that will have you glued to the screen.
There is a book where you can have a glimpse of each activity to make this come about: Dreaming of Hollywood - A Handbook for Moviegoers and Movie Lovers, by Amelie Couremer. It's short and really a guide to a better understanding of what goes on to bring you these entertaining moments. Read and you'll know how to appreciate movies.
Dreaming of Hollywood - A Handbook for Moviegoers and Movie Lovers is clearly a handbook. Acquiring the knowledge in each aspect of film making and what goes on behind the camera, will make your layman film watching a memorable experience. http://trckrs.com/116488/ezine

Iyashi is a special genre only found within anime (Japanese animation). The word Iyashi means "soothing" or "healing". The Iyashi genre feature anime series that enable the viewer to feel more relaxed and positive. The main traits that distinguish the Iyashi genre from other anime genres are:
  • A quiet and slow music score: The music of Iyashi anime helps the viewer become more relaxed.

  • A positive view on society and human interaction: Characters in Iyashi series tend to be optimistic and carefree. Their light, yet charming, conversations have the tendency to make the viewer feel better and more confident.

  • A sheltered environment: All Iyashi series occur in a sheltered environment, where characters are free from harm or danger. This makes their carefree life more believable and also allows the viewer to immerse himself/herself in the series' world.

  • A focus on aesthetics: Iyashi series focus on the beauty and aesthetics of things. For example, an episode might focus exclusively on traveling at sea or exploring a traditional city. The focus on aesthetics enables the viewer to appreciate his/her surroundings more and makes his/her viewing experience more refined.
The first Iyashi series is called Aria the Animation and was broadcasted in Japan during late 2005. It tells the story of Mizunashi Akari - a woman who wished to become an undine (gondolier) and trains daily in the waters surrounding the city of Neo Venezia (a futuristic copy of Venezia created on Mars). The anime was based on a manga called Aria and expended upon it greatly. The qualities of Iyashi are present in the series' invigorating background music, Akari's optimistic personality, the sheltered environment that is Neo Venezia and the miniature details Akari learns about the city in order to become a better undine.
Other series in the Iyashi genre include Bartender, Sketchbook: Full Color`s and Tamayura.
Bartender follows a bartender who attends the many requests of his patrons. The series uses the relaxed atmosphere of the bar to slow the passage of time while the bartender himself is a warm and intelligent figure. Bartender uses the romantic qualities that surround famous liquors to both impress and educate the viewer.
Sketchbook: Full Color's follows a high school student named Kajiwara Sora. Sora suffers from a mild case of autism and as a result sees the world in a much more peaceful and stationary way than others. Sora is a member of the art club and the series makes extensive use of nature paintings.
Tamayura follows a high school girl named Sawatari Fuu. Fuu wants to become a photographer and spends her days trying to catch the natural beauty of both nature and the human spirit.
Albeit still being rare Iyashi series are very distinct. As the above examples show Iyashi series incorporate within them prominent aspects of the Japanese culture such as the Japanese respect for nature and appreciation of aesthetic qualities.
Nadav Rotchild has a master's degree in East Asian Studies and has lived in Japan for a year. He is the founder of Anime Reviews - a website dedicated to the coverage of Japanese popular culture mediums such as anime, manga and Japanese figures.

Before you go cover any event, you need to make your own preparations so that you don't miss any moment worth covering! The events that you cover differ in their nature and their layout.
For instance, while in a wedding, many things might be happening simultaneously and hence you might need two or more cameras to be set up at different places, in a corporate event of a day-long workshop, you may not need to place so many cameras. Even so, some basic guidelines can be followed for event videography:
1. Know the schedule of the event
There could be nothing worse than not knowing where to be at a particular moment and missing a scene for video coverage! If you are a wedding videographer, you will need to develop a schedule outlining the day's events from the bride getting dressed, to the bride's arrival to the reception. You will know where you are expected to be at different times of the day.
Likewise, if is a corporate event you are covering, you will need to know when the corporate guests are arriving, when they will be taken on stage or when the floor will be open for questions. Since you will know what to anticipate next, you can beforehand, decide the placement and position of your camera and coordinate with the organizers for hassle-free coverage.
2. Consider yourself the only videographer
Videographers tell beginners to think as if they are the only videographers covering the event even if they aren't!
For instance, you might not be able to get the close-up of the host presenting the award to a guest and you might think that your assistant will take care of it from their camera. However, what if your assistant was unable to do so? In somewhat informal functions such as weddings, you can carry out a reenactment to make up for any missing elements. However, this may not always be possible in a corporate event.
3. Arrive early and leave last.
This will be for your own convenience. It takes more time than anticipated to set up the equipment. Similarly, leaving last will allow you to capture as much footage of the event as possible.
4. Length of shots
For the best possible shots, keep the average shot length between 5 to 10 seconds and keep a shot steady for at least 10 seconds. This will make the video fun and enticing.
