For the last century, archeology has maintained that human civilization arose around 5,000 years ago almost simultaneously in both Egypt and Mesopotamia. The bets were on, that the Sumerians; who lived near the Delta of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in modern day Iraq, were the actual originators of mankind's first civilization. Conservative archeologists now have a major conundrum on their hands.
An archeological dig, currently underway at a place called Gobekli Tepe in Southern Turkey, threatens to undermine all this archeological dogma. The dating of this site is set at around 9500 BCE. That is over 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. 6,000 years before Egypt or Sumeria. That means that civilization on an advanced level goes almost twice as far back in time. What is most strange about this particular site is that it is built in different stages and all of it was purposely buried. Even stranger is that the oldest structures uncovered are the more advanced. The oldest known Sphinx on Earth has also been discovered there and is dated at around 9500BCE.
The basic shape of the so far unearthed complexes are of three concentric rings and bear a resemblance to the kivas of abandoned Pueblo Cultures in the Southwest US. Unusual T shaped columns of various heights and thicknesses are located in the center of each central ring. Each column has some carving on it, which archeologists have deduced may represent various Constellations in the Heavens. Although the site has only been about 5% uncovered, no residential or living areas have yet been found. Nor have any graves or burial sites, either. What has been dug up was clearly used for some form of religious or ceremonial purpose. Making this the oldest known religious site on Earth.
But why purposely bury all of this? Why are the oldest structures the more advanced? Why the 3 ringed structures? Why was a Sphinx created in Gobekli Tepe 6,000 years before the Great Sphinx was reputedly built in Egypt? Perhaps for the same reason that we build architectural structures in the exact same style of the Greeks and Romans. We still do this over 1500 years after the Fall of the Roman World. Why? Because we wish to associate these structures with the power and authority associated with the magnificence of the Greek and Roman Civilizations.
There are many ancient sites associated with strange and esoteric mythology. Much of the origin of these myths has been lost to the fog of time through war, erosion, Earth changes and natural disasters. Yet that doesn't mean there isn't some foundation of truth to all of them.
On the Northwestern tip of Morocco, an archeological dig is underway at a site called Lixus. Much of Lixus is still to be uncovered. Lixus is currently about 3 kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean and is said in ancient historical records to be near where the Garden of the Hesperides was located. The Garden of the Hesperides in Morocco? The Hesperides, of Greek legend, are 3 nymphs who tended golden apple trees with forbidden fruit. These gold apples held the secrets of the Gods within them. Does a Garden with forbidden apples sound familiar? Why would the Greeks believe that the Garden of Hesperides was located near Morocco? So many legends surround the ancient World, that there has to be an original truth to them. There must be a currently lost location in Morocco, where this legend originated. Possibly one of Atlantis's destroyed Colonies? Or maybe the actual Garden of Eden?
The fabled city of Troy comes from Homer's classic,"The Iliad" which archeologists considered a "fabrication" until Heinrich Schliemann actually unearthed the city and proved it did exist. The exact same things are being said of another fabled place.
Which brings me to Atlantis. The only known mention of Atlantis was made by Plato in his Timaeus and Critias dialogues which I will not re-iterate here. Only that Plato specifically states: "that it was an island continent larger than Libya and Asia combined." Now I don't know if you have looked at any maps of Libya, but any land mass that large was pretty big. To the Greeks of Plato's time "Asia" was essentially what we now refer to as Asia Minor. Another reasonably sized landmass. Put the two together and you don't come up with Santorini, Cyprus, Bimini, Southern Spain nor any of the other currently in vogue Atlantis candidates. Not even if you combined them all.
Libya and Asia minor together are larger than the entire Mediterranean Sea. Which Plato considered a "lake" compared to the outer ocean in which Atlantis was specifically located.. Plato also states that Atlantis was west of the pillars of Hercules, what is now the Straits of Gibraltar, definitely in the greater ocean. That which we euphemistically have named the Atlantic. Plato also stated: "Atlantis disappeared within a single day and night 10,000 years before his time." Which, for Plato was 10,000 years before 360 BCE.
Now you do the math. Gobekli Tepe is dated around 9500 BCE and Atlantis around 10,000 BCE. Which means they existed around the same approximate time. Atlantis was described by Plato as having 3 concentric rings of land surrounding it. Gobekli Tepe is constructed along a 3 concentric ring design as well. A cultural echo similar to our copying of Greco-Roman architectural styles?
Recently, evidence of what appears to be a gigantic tsunami is being uncovered all around the Eastern Mediterranean dated to have occurred around 8,000 BCE. Take the land mass the size of Atlantis, as described by Plato and suddenly sink it into the ocean and you are going to have a displacement of water on a scale never before seen by man. Tidal waves of 2-3 miles in height would race across the world's waterways destroying everything under the height of those waves. And drive deep into the interior of most landmasses. Destroying everything along any of the World's coastlines. This would account for all the Great Deluge myths and possibly all this tsunami evidence now accumulating around the Mediterranean Sea.
This could also explain why Gobekli Tepe exists only 100 miles from Mt. Ararat, Turkey, where the Biblical Noah is said to have departed his Ark. There is always some foundation of truth in all myths. A surviving ship from Atlantis could have been carried to and deposited on Mt Ararat by a tidal wave of such incredible height. Those, who exited this Ark could have created a nearby community for some continuation of their culture. Or created many small communities and then constructed Gobeli Tepe as a central location solely for religious/astronomical, or communal reasons.
The trauma of the Atlantis disaster, and the ensuing economic hardship may have caused a slow decline in the level of technology and craftsmanship at Gobekli Tepe. Atlantis was a seafaring civilization with a tremendous sea food based infra-structure. Gobekli Tepe is nowhere near the Sea. So there must have been a period of some food shortages and nutritional decline. Possibly, even diseases caused by vitamin deficiencies could have afflicted them. There may also have been a severe lessening in population over the years of Gobekli Tepe's existence, which meant shortcuts in construction techniques. Thus, lower quality construction became necessary.
But why bury this site and not simply abandon it? Because, either they planned to return at some future date or they wanted something kept preserved there for future discovery.
Future excavations at Gobekli Tepe may reveal some startling surprises from mankind's past. I recently E-mailed a request to one of the archeologists working at Gobekli Tepe to get a visual on the sphinx discovered there. No response has come back. It is my considered opinion, that some of the discoveries at Gobekli Tepe are being purposely withheld from public perusal. I am not the only one who has requested this Sphinx image. Established archeology may deeply fear what the discoveries at Gobekli Tepe may imply.
